Apple HomeView and Home Collection: What's Actually Local
Apple announced two things on October 13, 2026: Apple HomeView, a 7-inch screen with a speaker, and Apple Home Collection, a set of cameras, a lock, and thermostats made with LG and Schneider Electric. Everything is set up and managed in the Apple Home app.

Apple says the collection starts in December, with “select accessories” in early 2027. It doesn’t say which ones are late. The wall HomeView uses Schneider mounts: USB-C ($59.95), AC wired ($79.95), and PoE ($129.95). The PoE mount comes in early 2027. HomeView isn’t sold in the EU. Apple says that’s because Siri AI is currently unavailable in iOS in the EU.
HomeView
HomeView is a home hub, like a HomePod or Apple TV. There’s more on what a home hub does in Alexa, Apple Home, Google Home, and Home Assistant. It shows up to nine camera feeds at once, controls accessories by touch or voice, and listens for smoke and CO alarms. It runs Siri AI, which Apple lists as beta in HomeView software 27.2. Siri requests run either on the device or in Apple’s Private Cloud Compute. Apple doesn’t say which requests go where.
I will probably not replace anything with the HomeView, including my wall tablet dashboard. But if I didn’t have a hub like Hubitat or Home Assistant, this would be a very good option. I’d definitely be interested in the wall mount version. The big limitation is that I still can’t import my Reolink cameras, like the one on my front porch.
What’s local in the collection
- Every accessory supports Thread, which Apple says helps it stay connected if Wi-Fi drops.
- The lock is Matter compatible and Apple says core functions work without an internet connection.
- The thermostats and sensors are Matter compatible.
- Camera footage is processed on your home hub or in Private Cloud Compute. History is kept in iCloud for 10 days, which requires iCloud+. Apple’s release doesn’t call the cameras Matter devices.
What it means if Hubitat or Home Assistant runs the house
The Matter parts should, in principle, also pair to Hubitat or Home Assistant through Matter multi-admin (Home Assistant’s Matter docs cover sharing a device from Apple Home): you set them up in Apple Home first, then share them to the other controller. Nobody can confirm that with these devices until they ship. On Hubitat, any Thread device has to be commissioned by Apple Home first unless you have the C-8 Pro Thread Special Edition.
Going the other way, Hubitat devices can already show up on a HomeView through Hubitat’s HomeKit Bridge, the same as on a phone. I covered that setup in Hubitat in the middle.
The cameras look like the part that stays inside Apple. Without Matter, getting them into another system depends on whatever Apple exposes, and the release doesn’t say.
Apple’s cameras use HomeKit Secure Video, with event history stored in iCloud+.
